Why I enjoy the trading card game Magic: the Gathering

The story

Magic's story is long and extensive. Starting in the mid 90's, the lore encompasses thousands of years of conflict and creation that keeps the game alive and entertaining beyond just gameplay. Every expansion comes with some amount of history to add to Magic's ever growing story.

The mechanics

The rules of Magic are both complex and necessary for the game to function. Each rule interacts with another in a way similar to computer programs, building off of one another or modifying a prior rule's affects. This causes many games to run into unforseen interactions and odd edgecases that keep things interesting.

The art

Art comes in many forms, and Magic has managed to capture a variety of these mediums. Artists of all backgrounds and styles have colaborated with Wizards of the Coast over the years to provide memorable art for even the most forgettable of cards, making each card stand out from one another as well as stand out amongst the swaths of other card games. The same card may be redone by several artists over the years as there is always room for exploration in the representation of Magic and its artists.
