About Me: Carol Cavazos

What I learned in school...

I graduated from Winona State with a BS in Business Administration and minors in English and Spanish. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I graduated but I was pretty sure that if I went to school for what I really liked: advertisements, layouts, colors, graphics, and logos, I would end up living in a van down by the river.

Those I trusted told me:

What life taught me...

I worked for several years in a job that paid in cash only; never joy. Eventually, I found a job at the same place designing web-based trainings. (I would later come to realize that those who interviewed me for that job were members of my nerd tribe). It felt like I’d won the lottery when they told me that I would spend my days in the Creative Cloud working with layouts, colors, graphics and instructional design.

I started taking college classes in graphic design when I realized my employer would pay for them. I learned so many valuable things that I was interested in and that made me better at my job. Oh, and I met a lot of people who were earning a comfortable living doing professionally what they learned in art school.

This is my favorite website: perpetualkid.com

This is how I felt the whole time I was working on this assignment.

A note to my younger self:

  1. Life’s too short to let other decide your path, so trust your gut
  2. If you follow your strengths and your passions the money will follow
