All About Me

Let's Play: Two Truths and a Lie

  1. I have never held a driver's license.
  2. I am afraid of heights.
  3. I am an airline pilot.

The Reveal About Me

LIE: I am not an airline pilot. I actually work as a flight attendant.

The Contradictions About Me

TRUTH: I am a flight attendant, who has never held a driver's license, and is terribly afraid of heights.

For me, the typical 16-year-old milestone came and went, because I have very strict and cautious parents. Being the first-born, I thought it wise not to defy them when I was told I was "not ready" to drive. In high school, I got around in my friends' cars. Once I moved to the Twin Cities, I used public transportation. I was in awe when I first saw a cyclist put his bike on the front of a bus--or in the train, for that matter. It only took a few months for me to dub myself a bike commuter, even in the winter. Once I started my flight attendant job, it seemed pointless for me to pursue the achievement of car-ownership; I was always on the go!

So, holding a driver's license remains on the back-burner to this day...

As for my debilitating fear of heights, you'd be suprised to know the statistics of flight and cabin crew members who share this sentiment. I have a very strong memory of riding on my Dad's shoulders as a toddler (probably), gripping his hair and covering his eyes to save myself from gravity. At age 14, I gathered the courage to get on the ferris wheel at a carnival. Unfortunately, I got paired with an 8-year-old kid, who loved seeing the horror on my face, as he swung the seat, like we were auditioning for a new Final Destination movie. For my 21st birthday, I was determined to rid myself of this fear. I made a trip to Hershey Park with my best friends "to be done with it," I'd thought. I rode every single roller coaster that day...not short of crying before, during, and after each ride.

After all of that, I'm still afraid heights.
