Marvel and Its Amazing Impact on My Life

1. So Much More Than Just Superheroes

To be completely honest, for as long as I can remember, Marvel has been a huge part of my life. To me personally, it has always been much more than just superheroes fighting villains or saving the world. Marvel introduced me to characters, artists, writers, movies, shows, and games that helped shape a large part of my childhood. As I have gotten older, my appreciation for Marvel has only continued to grow, especially as I have developed more of my own strong interests in drawing and graphic design as a whole.

What really makes Marvel special to me is just how many different ways I was able to experience it growing up. Comic books were obviously a huge part of Marvel's identity, but movies, animated series, and video games were just as important to me personally. Each medium gave these characters a different personality and style, and honestly, I think being surrounded by all of that creativity played a major role in making me want to become a better artist myself.

2. The Marvellous Creators Behind the Marvel Universe

One thing I have grown to appreciate even more over time is just the enormous number of artists, writers, editors, filmmakers, and many other creators behind Marvel. Significant, extraordinary people like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and even Steve Ditko helped establish characters and worlds that would eventually influence generations of people. Later creators continued to reinterpret those ideas through their own artwork and storytelling. As someone who absolutely loves drawing more than anything, I find that especially inspiring because it shows how just one simple creative idea can continuiously be reimagined and reinterpreted to evolve through completely different generations and artistic styles.

3. The Marvellous Experience of Growing Up With Marvel Outside the Comics

Although it may not come off as a huge surprise to most people, some of my absolute strongest memories of Marvel actually come from outside of the comic books. I grew up loving many different interpretations of these characters, especially through movies and animated television. The Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, the early X-Men films, Blade, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Daredevil, and Ghost Rider all represent a specific era of Marvel that I still have an incredibly enormous amount of nostalgia for and probably will always have for the rest of my life. They were just all so different from one another, and that was honestly part of what made them super memorable to me.

Animation opened that world even further than I could've ever imagined. Amazing shows such as X-Men: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Wolverine and the X-Men, and so many more gave me completely different ways of seeing characters I already loved. Each of their unique character designs, animation, music, voices, and storytelling all created distinct versions of the Marvel universe that have stayed in my mind for so many years that it's almost unbelieveable to just think about it.

4. The Marvellous Games That Defined My Childhood and Beyond

Video games were obviously another massive part of that experience. Being able to actually control and "become" these characters in real-time made Marvel feel even more interactive and personal to me on a distinct level. Games like the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Neversoft's Spider-Man 1 & 2, X-Men Legends, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Ultimate Spider-Man, and even Spider-Man: Web of Shadows introduced me to so many characters and parts of the Marvel Universe that I probably wouldn't have discovered in quite the same way otherwise. Even today, I can go back to many of these games and immediately remember why they captured my ever-growing imagination in the first place.

  1. Marvel vs. Capcom series (1994-Present)
  2. Neversoft's Spider-Man series (2000-2001)
  3. Treyarch's Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007)
  4. X-Men Legends series (2004-2005)
  5. Ultimate Spider-Man (2005)
  6. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (2006)
  7. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (2008)
  8. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
  9. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (2009)
  10. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (2010)

5. The Lasting Impact of Marvel on My Life
Just as a way to put it all together, deep down I truly believe that Marvel has influenced me in such tremendous ways that go far beyond simply being just something I enjoy for the sake of fun and entertainment. Growing up around so many different characters, stories, visual styles, and creative minds thouroughly helped build my appreciation for art and storytelling in the first place. As I continue to grow and greatly improve as an artist, I always find myself appreciating and being eternally thankful to the people behind these amazing characters just as much as the awesome characters themselves. Marvel has continously showed me time and time again that art, regardless of its form, can be strange, dramatic, colorful, emotional, funny, and completely imaginative all at once. That sense of creativity is something I genuinely hope to carry into my own work for the rest of my entire life.
